Hi everyone!
After a whirlwind trip to the SCBWI Winter Conference, where I was inspired by our keynote speaker, Joseph Coelho, Children's Poet Laureate for the UK, I'm back home and diving deep into poetry again with this week's Story Cubes poem.
This poem is part of my ongoing challenge to myself to write to a prompt generated by Story Cubes. I'm trying to reflect the order of the images on the cubes in the poem itself, and I'm challenging myself to write quickly: 20 minutes or less for each poem.
This week's prompts left me feeling stymied for a while, but I let the images simmer for a while as I was cooking dinner and soon this poem emerged.
I Gave a Wave
Then I waved goodbye
But I’ll be back!

What about you? What would you do with these as inspiration? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
Our generous host for Poetry Friday this week is Tabatha Yeatts over at The Opposite of Indifference. Hop on over to her blog for more poetic inspiration!
That's a great poem to memorize, complete with hand gestures :)
ReplyDeleteI liked your process Elisabeth where you let your thoughts simmer. Such rehearsal is invaluable. It should never be waved away...
ReplyDeleteSuch ruminations give birth to inspired ideas. They just need our considered thoughts and a little faith. The poem is result of your investment.
oooooh, I love things like this. I also love metaphor dice. I'm jealous of your SCBWI conference. I hope it was productive for you---digging back into poetry sure is a good sign.
ReplyDeleteA hand, a hand, a hand
a wave, a wave, a wave
a man, a man, a man
is all I see today.
This little ditty might be sparked by Janice Scully's post that I just read. LOL.
Fun poem! I was also at NYC SCBWI. Love Joseph Coehlo! I wrote about him this week too!
ReplyDeleteGreat job!! Thanks for the smile today (waving to you). :D
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a timer for a prompt--and yours is charming!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm waving to you, Elisabeth for showing us those story cubes again, and now you "wave" your poetry wand and create a poem! It's a nice ending to our Friday's poems! Happy Sunday!
ReplyDeleteFun poem Elizabeth and thanks for introducing me to story cubes, I might have to pick some up…
ReplyDeleteHello rolling waves
which way will you roll?
I might have to
quickly roll on my way,
perhaps I'll see you
on another day…
How fun! I love your story poem. I recently sold a board book ms with a theme of nature knowing us as much as we know it. Your poem resonated with that for me!
ReplyDeleteI've got to HAND it to you --
ReplyDeleteYou're as faithful as the TIDES.
And even though you're feeling BLUE
You WALK with me side by side.
Oh, that's fun. The wordplay gave me a chuckle. I'll have to see if a poem of my own rises to the surface, so to speak.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, your poem simmered slowly evolved while cooking. That's a good time to ruminate. Your poem brings me back to my forever love, the ocean. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteA fun way to play with words, Elisabeth. Your poem turned out *swell*. :)
